The New York-based scammer maintained a small call center to target unsuspecting victims, luring them into creating Coinbase wallets on phishing websites embedded with malicious seed phrases. Nieves' scheme exploited the trust victims placed in Coinbase's customer support, leading them to believe they were interacting with legitimate representatives. The scammer would then guide victims through creating new wallets on compromised websites, unknowingly planting malicious seed phrases that granted Nieves access to the stolen funds. The majority of the stolen cryptocurrency was funneled into the gambling platform Roobet, where Nieves likely attempted to launder the illicit gains.
